Kalimuendo Strikes as Nottingham Forest Claim Nostalgic Victory Over Malmö
“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” was chanted through the stadium as Nottingham Forest followers celebrated another win against Malmö. Much has transpired since Francis's decisive header secured the continental trophy back in 1979, but the club still treasure those memories. Equally, major shifts have taken place in the five weeks since the manager took charge, with Forest looking refreshed and earning a convincing win thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Milenkovic, enhancing their prospects of progressing in the European competition.
Building Steam with Another Straight Victory
For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after ending sixth in their home competition – marked a third consecutive win across all competitions and added to the momentum gained from the previous week's success at Anfield. While this fixture was a reminder of the club's historic triumph in spirit, the encounter itself was free of any real jeopardy or jitters.
This was an occasion dripping in nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third competitive meeting between the teams since the showpiece event 46 years ago.
The home side fully embraced the history, honoring the legends of 1979 by giving them, along with their Malmö counterparts, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Malmö's team from then were also present. The two clubs shared a meal together prior to the match. Forest legends and their teammates were given a rousing welcome when they assembled on the field a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a characteristically superb tifo was shown in the home stand.
Recalling History
“30th May 1979, Robertson delivered the ball from the left flank,” displayed one part of a large banner, in block capitals. While nobody needed reminding of what ensued, the rest was unfurled as the players came out from the dressing rooms. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. Another stunning display depicted Brian Clough observing events beside his assistant Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.
Dominance from the Outset
So, the hosts had drunk in those wonderful memories, but what about the performance on the night? It was strong, too. They were in complete control from the moment the forward whistled an attempt wide inside two minutes and established a 2-0 lead by the half-time interval. Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Abbott, on his maiden European start, tried his luck.
It felt fitting that Yates, who joined Forest as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the visitors' defence led by their own homegrown skipper, Pontus Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford FC. The Forest centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a cross deflect off a defender and into the pathway of Yates, who finished with his right foot from just inside the box to register his first goal since last March.
Second Goal Confirms Dominance
Yates was involved in Forest’s next goal on the verge of the interval, too, his free header saved by the shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but Kalimuendo on hand to convert the loose ball from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder given a rare start and only his second outing since the autumn, was the catalyst, chipping a perfect ball towards his teammate at the back post.
A minute earlier, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was turned wide off the back Rösler, son of former Manchester City striker Uwe, and an free the defender also previously had a powerful header smartly saved by Ellborg, who was back in place of the former Villa goalie Robin Olsen.
Malmö’s Struggles
This was Malmö’s first match since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on November 9th, and they struggled to equal the home team's intensity. The Reds extended the lead to three when Milenkovic applied the finishing touch after his centre-back partner Murillo headed back a set-piece. Yates had a shot stopped, but the Serbia defender Milenkovic pounced on the rebound.
The home side then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a effort on to the bar before Sangaré sent an ambitious shot wide from 30 yards. It was that kind of evenings. Dyche, aware of the upcoming league game here against Brighton & Hove Albion, made seven changes from the side that surprised the Reds at Anfield recently, when they also scored three goals, though he called on Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus during the final period.
Smooth Night for Forest
It turned out to be a flawless evening for Forest. Dyche could withdraw the defender with the game long since boxed off and later introduced teenage defender Jimmy Sinclair for his senior bow. Dyche discussed the Forest old guard providing “bits of gold” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad showed they are able of a few nuggets of thrills, too.
